I agree very much with points being made by Steve Guy. We have not only excluded ourselves from eurozone members but als all the others - so the idea of a two speed EU will likely be 26 on the fast track and 1 (UK) in the slow lane.

Surely, we have all supported the Tobin tax over the years so why should there be separate consideration for the City compared to Frankfurt for instance. Anyway, I though we were supposed to be re-structuring our economy to be less dependent on financial services!

The Lib Dem parliamentary leadership seem to be supporting the Tories over this - another cave in.

Your post is completely missing any economic credibility. The reason our (and many other countries) economies are in such a mess is because they are run by politicians, not economists. Tax needs to be cut drastically in Britain in order to revitalise our ailing economy.

As you point out, Gordon Brown poured billions in the NHS for what? Little or no improvement. Public servants have showed with a 100% track record that they can not be trusted with our money.

Don't forget that the thing that funds all your socialism is capitalism. Over tax it and you kill it, then your overall tax take decreases drastically.

Overtaxing and over spending with extra borrowing isn't working. Just look around you to see the result.

Ah... this morning I too was awoken by the 'ting' of my iphone text alert, followed by another 'ting'. Both from friends alerting me to his death. A huge loss to the world of tech, business... and just the world. I hope his legacy continues in the same vein as when he was alive.

I too remember these gorgeous little cakes that looked almost too good to eat. They were little works of art. And that seems to be why they are no longer produced. The rising price of chocolate and the fact that they were hand filled and finished, made them far too expensive to produce. They could not find a way of making a machine which could mass produced them, so sadly they just stopped making them. Personally I would be willing to pay the premium price to have them back in my life again. They really were something special. A proper teatime treat.

I have voted Liberal Democrat all my life, facing frustration from people who told me consistently that it was a wasted vote. Then ironically the Lib Dems get a shot at power and they become the worst hypocrites in the history of British Politics. I suppose the choice now is between voting Tory or Labout where you know you are going to get screwed but at least they are honest about it or voting Liberal Democrat and being told you won't but still getting screwed.
Shame on the party. I used to work at local level in Harrow. I will never do so again. My son marched yesterday and I was ashamed that I couldn't march with him. May be the Tory offices should not have been the target?

Deeply foolish - in your opinion.
However I believe your opinion is "deeply foolish".

Would you like to explain in detail why "It matters which order things are done in".
Very easy to write such trite...

I'm afraid this is deeply foolish. I am passionately in favour of the new politics, but they are impossible without PR first - not out of ideological purity but out of sheer practicality. It matters which order things are done in and the new politics in the old system will fail because the old system is so strong and destructive.

Great piece. Recently, in my personal life I have come to realise that you just can't always get everything you want. If you try sometimes, you might find you get some of what you want. But you take it, and you bank it, and then you try for some more. It took many decades for women to get the vote, for black people to get equal rights, for the empire to be defeated.

Progress happens step by step! It's not what most of us wanted - but tough ****, let's make the best of what we've got. I'd rather we start down that path today, tomorrow, the next five years - than stand still, go nowhere, go backwards: which is what Labour will do.

Bravo the Lib Dems.
